# How to freelance There are advantages to starting small: - You can start work there, then scale upward. - You're able to test what works and what doesn't, with minimal risk. - If you can do it part-time, it's much easier to finance your activities. If it's side work, you don't *need* to scale upward. - Sometimes, the market is sparse enough that you *can't* scale upward. - However, if you're [willing to move](home-moving.md), there's often a [culture](people-culture.md) *somewhere* on the planet where you could work full-time in that capacity. You also won't need to subject yourself to as rigorous a requirement to [break even](entrepreneur-3_plan.md). - Low costs give the freedom to experiment with simple, little ideas. - It also gives very little pressure to over-invest into an idea that may or may not work. - If you lose money on some of them, you're fine as long as you do other tasks that [pay the bills](money-3_budget.md). - Like [investing](money-investing.md), small one-off jobs and ideas will diversify your income streams. However, for many industries, you *will* need to invest a certain amount of money and time. - To offset the money you'll need, [budget](money-3_budget.md) and [save](money-saving.md) for the business as much as possible *before* you start into it.
